UNIVERSITAT POLITÈCNICA DE VALÈNCIA
We train people, we train professionals
The seed of what is today known as the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV) was planted in the academic year 1968-1969, when the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Valencia was created. At that time it comprised four schools: the School of Agricultural Engineering, founded in 1959; the School of Architecture, inaugurated in 1966; the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Industrial Engineering, both of them created in 1968. But it is not until 1971 (as a result of the Order of 11th March, through which the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Valencia is conferred the highest academic status), when this institution becomes the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Currently, the UPV community is made up of over 42,000 people. Of these, nearly 37,800 are students, 2,600 are members of the teaching and research staff and 1,700 are administrative and services personnel. UPV is composed of 10 schools, 3 faculties and 2 higher polytechnic schools.UPV applies strict teaching and research quality control schemes. Likewise, the University encourages and supports its staff in their projects, as well as encouraging national and international co-operation.
UPV Continuing Education Center (CFP-UPV) was founded in 1992 as a centralized support service of the University. In 2009, more than 46.000 professionals participated in the more than 2.200 continuing education activities of the UPV. CFP is the operative host of this World Conference.
UPV pays special attention and give all their support to the incorporation of their graduates into the labour market. They encourage contacts between businesses and students through internships at enterprises and public institutions. Postgraduate studies, both PhD programmes and Master’s degrees, are also very important for UPV. They have been innovators in many of these countries and they continue to make progress, not only to consolidate their programmes, but also to initiate new joint ventures and to strengthen bonds with other South American countries, Japan (where they have already signed cooperation agreements with universities in Mie and Suzuka), the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and the United States of America. UPV has a specific exchange service for students and teachers, which is leader in the Erasmus Programme. During the past academic year 2,437 students made use of this programme.
SPAIN
Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Reino de España), is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the northwest and west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. With an area of 504,030 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union after France.
VALÈNCIA
The city Valencia is the main city of the autonomous region of Valencia, which lies in the east of Spain. It borders with Aragon and Castile-La Mancha in the west, with the region of Murcia in the south, and with the Mediterranean sea in the east and north. In Valencia, two official languages are spoken: Spanish & Valencià. With average temperatures between 29º C in summer and 15º C in winter, Valencia has a mild Mediterranean climate. Being a 2000year old city with over 500 years of university tradition, it has a particular approach synthesizing respect to historical traditions and practical systematic innovation. Our city has developed a balance between the traditional and the new city setting; the biggest gothic area in Europe and the Santiago Calatrava’s city of science, arts and technology-former student of the UPV. Universitat Politécnica de Valencia, a third mission oriented university, represents that spirit in its mission: combining knowledge transfer, societal engagement, teaching and R&D. UPV accepted the challenge to host the 13th IACEE World Conference with the aim to contribute to a better understanding of the missions of higher education and its institutions.
